DAW crashes when opening Vital v1.5x (all versions): STILL NOT FIXED

Failure of all tricks found on the forums (e.g. use the default skin). It would be a graphics problem (I’m running win 10 - Reaper / Intel I5 - HD Graphics 4600).
This graphic card is not very new, but Vital is my only plugin (and even my only software) affected by this bug. In addition, it is impossible to use presets (especially paid presets) created with V1.5x.
Nobody wants to change his hardware because of a single plugin. So please, fix this bug as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance.

What is the bug?
Have you tried signing out in the standalone and working offline?

Same here. V 1.55, Win 10, Live 11.2.5 and VST2, 3 and standalone instant crash.

Yes, I tried logging out/in. The bug is documented on the internet. It needs to be fixed, not offering useless tricks or none working workarounds. No other software has this problem. Do it, please…

Or, y’know, you could wait until the update is out of beta

Even on my internet system which is also an i5 with Intel HD Graphics Vital loads and works fine in Reaper. (Win 10, Vital 1.5.5)

So it’s just as likely a system specific or settings issue there as it is a bug.

A bug especially one as core level as a DAW crashing when loading Vital would affect all systems with similar specs.

Try using the VST 2 version as the VST 3 version of any plugin can be problematic.

Could you clarify the spec of your hardware and DAW, please:

RAM
CPU i5???
Reaper version

Where is it documented?

I too am running Vital in Reaper 6.7.3 and Live Standard 11.2.7 with no issues relating to crashes.

Did you have a problem with earlier versions of Vital (pre 1.5.x)?

same here with the same config than you.

Thanks for the information

Not beating around the bush ,but by giving this amount of detail it may help developers identify what is causing the issue.

Unfortunately, in my experience, when an issue is problematical (i.e. only occurring in a few instances or intermittently) it is much harder to identify the cause, hence the more information that is available, the better.

But the fact that it works for most people indicates it’s a system specific issue. A core level bug generally affects all users.

If we all have the same version of Vital installed then we all have the same code. It’s not like one person has a copy with a bug and another person has a copy where the bug does not exist.

So you just have to figure out why on your system it crashes while on other similar systems it does not.

Like I said earlier try the VST 3 version and if you have a CLAP capable DAW try that version as well.

This is from the other thread on the crashes:
Intel HD Graphics 4600
That is the same GPU as reported in this thread so that may be a clue.

This system which also has onboard Intel Graphics (2500) runs Vital just fine (VST2, VST3, and CLAP versions). My studio system has a GTX 1050ti and Vital runs perfectly on it as well.

But again if we compare the number of people reporting this issue against the number of those who are not then it points towards it being a system specific issue.

In other words there is something about those systems where the crashes occur that is not present on the systems where the crashes do not occur.

Whether that’s the GPU or Drivers or Resolution, Graphics settings etc.

I tested every versions on the last version of Reaper. Clap version of Surge XT works fine.

Not able to download your event report, but a little research on the internet shows that there have been issues in the past between Windows 10 and the Intel HD 4600 graphica card. These tend to be older issues but see thios thread on Gear Space as it isonly 4 weeks old.

Given the results of my research I am surprised

but it looks as if it may be a graphics driver issue, possibly related to OPEN GL (other apps have issues with OPEN GL) and not an application issue. I suggest that if you have OPEN GL enabled try disabling it as a test,

At the end of the mail, you’ll find the contents of the Report.wer file, following the Reaper crash.
The Intel Graphics 4600 interface does not allow to enable or disable Open Gl, and I certainly won’t fiddle with the BIOS and take the risk of crashing everything.

The bottom line is this:

 • I am not the only one affected by the problem.
 • I can’t update Vital or use the presets made with 1.5x
 • I have hundreds of applications on my PC, including many VST2, VST3, and Vital.
 • People keep giving me fiddling tips or suggestion like changing the PC.

The fact that Vital is the only product concerned reinforces my conclusion that this is a bug, even if the result is a kind of hardware incompatibility.

So please tell us if you intend to try to fix it.

Merci Beaucoup !

Same here. V1.5.x Vst and standalone doesn’t open. (V1.07 works perfectly). Here is my config.

Do you know what your graphics processor is, and do you have OpenGL enabled?

Although I am not a techie, I believe that there may be an issue with graphics processing as I know that other vst applications (e.g. Scaler 2) have similar issues on Windows when OpenGL is enabled.

Apportioning responsibility for resolving these issues is difficult as it may be a combination of parameters that is causing this issue in a small number of cases.

For example my configuration is
Windows 10 Home 21H1
Intel(R) Core™ i7-10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz
16 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1600 graphics card

and I have no problems.

I have found what I believe is the change log for 1.5.1 on my Vital account

 • Undo / Redo
 • Added new spectral warp modes - custom filter, custom flanger, custom phaser
 • Added seed option to random amplitude spectral warp
 • Added way to set a default preset
 • Runs natively on Apple silicon
 • Added ASIO support to standalone
 • Added normalize and DC offset options to the wavetable editor
 • Added subharmonic unison mode
 • Added MIDI learn assignment indicator
 • Sped up plugin creation
 • Optimized CPU usage for sample rates above 48kHz
 • Faster window opening / closing
 • Faster browser searching
 • Faster window resizing
 • Graphics - New skin editor
 • Graphics - bloom + blur
 • Graphics - design improvements
 • Graphics - switched from OpenGL to DirectX11 on Windows
 • Graphics - switched from OpenGL to Metal on MacOS
 • Retains browser state after closing and reopening plugin window
 • Fixed slow graphics for the VST3 version in Cubase on MacOS
 • Fixed graphics offset in some DAW / monitor DPI combinations on Windows
 • Fixed oscilloscope phase alignment when notes are played with sample offset
 • Fixed logging in from app in some countries
 • Fixed plugin startup issues with some internet connections
 • Fixed staying logged in on non-Debian Linux distros
 • Fixed staying logged in for some DAWs
 • Fixed crash in Linux on fast window opening/closing
 • Fixed crash when downloading packs with some internet connections
 • Fixed effect modulation jumping after the last note ends
 • Fixed some effects sounding different under various sample rates
 • Fixed 2x octave unison mode
 • Fixed some computer keyboard mapping to midi notes
 • Dropped LV2 support on Linux
 • Removed some dependencies on Linux to increase compatibility

I note that with the upgrade to 1.5.x the graphics wasa moved from OpenGL to DirectX11 on Windows and Metal on MACs.

I wonder if this is contributing to the issue?

Just to clarify, Vital is developed by one person.

We’ve been trying to back and forth with you to figure out what the issue is. I’m not sure how much programming knowledge you have, but to fix a bug, you have to find it first.

Donc ???

I am not suggesting downgrading anything. I am simply stating what I have found. Re Scaler 2 as you will know if you have followed the Scaler forum there have been issues with Scaler 2 and OpenGL on some configurations (but not all).

All I am saying is that when Vital was upgraded to 1.5.x the graphics processing was changed to utilise DirectX11 architecture.

I would like to emphasise I am not a techie, and I do not write computer programmes.

However,

I believe that most users do not seem to be having this issue with Vital as there are not many threads or posts on this.

However, given the scale of the issue that you are having with this (and I recognise it is frustrating even if you are have the basic free account), I suggest you may want to consider the option of downgrading Vital to 1.0.x, if that worked for you. It is frustrating but with one developer as the bug is only occurring for a few users it could be difficult to isolate.

Alternatively you could consider prioritised support. As you know Vital is available with a number of subscription plans:

Basic: - free

Plus: - $25 paying for additional wave-tables and presets

Pro: - $80 more wave-tables and presets and prioritised support

Subscription:- $5 / month again giving access to prioritised support.

One final thought to reiterate that you are using Vital in Reaper DAW. I too use Vital in Reaper and it does not crash for me.

Just a thought but have you reviewed similar issues on the Reaper forum? I note on that there are a number of threads relating to Reaper crashing with various plug-ins.

Who is the “you” to whom you are referring. As you have posted this after my post I presume that you are replying to my post. If so you should understand that like you I am just a user who (possibly stupidly given your responses) has been trying to help you: so I cannot

As you have the Pro edition I suggest you either tweet or PM Matt Tytel about the issue asking if he can help as he is the developer of the software.

Furthermore, with an issue like this, which appears to be intermittent and only affecting some users, possibly with a specific configuration, identifying the problem could take some time, especially for a single developer.

Good day to you, sir.
